Scorecard:
South Africa continued their dominance over Australia in ODIs, securing the five-match series 3-0 with a clinical 84-run victory in the fourth ODI at the SCG. This marks South Africa’s fifth straight bilateral ODI series win over Australia since 2016 – a commanding streak now extended with a game to spare.
Opening batter Matthew Breetzke etched his name into the record books by becoming the first player in men’s ODI history to score 50+ in each of his first four matches. His fluent 88 set the tone for South Africa’s innings. Partnered by Tristan Stubbs, who notched up a maiden international fifty (74), the duo stitched a crucial 89-run stand for the fourth wicket, propelling the visitors to 277 all out.
Though South Africa lost 5 wickets for just 44 runs in the last 10 overs, their early batting foundation proved vital.
Pacer Lungi Ngidi led the bowling assault, picking up a match-winning 5 for 42 – his second career five-for in ODIs, both coming against Australia. Supported well by Nandre Burger, South Africa dismantled Australia’s batting line-up under lights, bowling them out for 193 in just 37.4 overs.
Ngidi's lethal spell saw him dismiss key batters including Josh Inglis (87), who once again stood alone amidst a faltering Australian top and middle order.
The loss extended a worrying trend for the hosts:
-
Fourth consecutive ODI loss at home (first time since 2009)
-
Bowled out in four straight home ODIs, without passing 200 in any – the first time this has happened in history
-
Seven losses in their last eight ODIs
Despite a spirited 87 from Josh Inglis, Australia failed to build lasting partnerships. Dropped catches by South Africa gave glimmers of hope, but Ngidi’s late burst shut the door firmly.
South Africa were far from flawless. They dropped three catches, including two by Stubbs, who has now put down six chances in five matches on this tour. Yet, the Proteas’ fielding intensity and bowling depth made up for those lapses.
-
Matthew Breetzke – 88 (4th consecutive ODI 50+, a new record)
-
Tristan Stubbs – 74 (maiden international fifty)
-
Lungi Ngidi – 5/42 (Player of the Match)
-
Josh Inglis – 87 (lone standout for Australia)
-
Adam Zampa – 3/63
-
Nathan Ellis – 2/46
With the series wrapped up 3-0, the final ODI will be played with pride on the line for Australia – who’ll aim to avoid a clean sweep at home. South Africa, meanwhile, will look to fine-tune their lineup ahead of upcoming global tournaments.
