New Kobe Bryant Movie ‘With the 8th Pick’ Reveals Untold NBA Draft Drama

Kobe Bryant’s journey to the Lakers is now being brought to the big screen in With the 8th Pick, a new film in development at Warner Bros
Kobe Bryant Lakers Draft Story Lands at Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. has secured the rights to With the 8th Pick, a new film project based on Kobe Bryant’s entry into the NBA and eventual trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
Written by Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen, the spec script centers on the events surrounding the 1996 NBA Draft. The story focuses on the New Jersey Nets—who held the eighth pick—and then-GM John Nash, who considered drafting Bryant straight out of high school. Ultimately, Bryant was selected 13th by the Charlotte Hornets and traded to the Lakers, where he went on to become a five-time NBA champion and a Los Angeles legend.
The project reportedly sparked significant interest across multiple studios and streamers before Warner Bros. stepped in to acquire it. A director is not yet attached.
Described as a blend of Moneyball, The Social Network, and Air, the film explores how a series of behind-the-scenes decisions shaped not only Bryant’s future but the trajectory of the NBA itself.
The film is being produced by Tim and Trevor White (Star Thrower Entertainment) and Ryan Stowell and Gotham Chopra of Religion of Sports, the media company co-founded by Chopra, Tom Brady, and Michael Strahan.
Bryant, who played his entire 20-season NBA career with the Lakers alongside stars like Shaquille O’Neal and under coach Phil Jackson, tragically died in a helicopter crash in 2020 alongside his daughter Gianna. He was 41.
Sohn is also writing a John Madden biopic for Netflix, also with Religion of Sports. Both Sohn and Johannsen are represented by Verve.
