FBI Raids Home of Former Trump Adviser John Bolton in Classified Documents Probe
In a significant development tied to a national security investigation, FBI agents executed a court-authorized raid Thursday morning at the Maryland home of John Bolton, the former national security advisor to former President Donald Trump. NBC News confirmed the search, which reportedly centers on the possible possession of classified documents.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the FBI raid is part of an ongoing federal investigation into potential mishandling of classified information. An FBI spokesperson confirmed the agency’s activity in the Bethesda area, near Washington, D.C., stating: “The FBI is conducting court-authorized activity in the area. There is no threat to public safety.” The statement did not specifically mention Bolton.
FBI Director Kash Patel, who reportedly authorized the investigation, shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) at approximately 7 a.m. ET — around the same time agents arrived at Bolton’s residence. “NO ONE is above the law… @FBI agents on mission,” Patel wrote.
Attorney General Pam Bondi supported Patel’s remarks by reposting his statement and adding, “America’s safety isn’t negotiable. Justice will be pursued. Always.” Meanwhile, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also weighed in, stating, “Public corruption will not be tolerated.”
The New York Post first reported the FBI raid and cited a Trump administration official who claimed Patel initiated the investigation into Bolton.
Bolton has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump and previously faced legal challenges from the Justice Department. In 2020, the DOJ sued Bolton in an attempt to block the release of his memoir, The Room Where It Happened, which included critical revelations from his time as national security advisor between 2018 and 2019. At the time, government lawyers accused Bolton of violating his security clearance agreement by disclosing classified material. The lawsuit was ultimately dropped in mid-2021, shortly after President Joe Biden took office.
Before serving under Trump, Bolton was U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush.
As of now, no formal charges have been filed against Bolton, and further details on the nature of the classified materials being investigated have not been disclosed.
